ZachXBT Identifies 160 Influencers Covertly Promoting New Tokens
On the first day of autumn Block- detective ZachXBT has published a spreadsheet with the names of hundreds of cryptocurrency influencers who received early access to tokens from projects they were supposed to promote.
ZachXBT’s analysis found that of the 160 people who signed up, fewer than five indicated that their posts were paid advertising.
It is worth adding here that it is not at all necessary that celebrities themselves participate in the promotion of new projects. Often, scammers act instead of them, and in 2024 alone, according to the FBI, Americans lost $9,3 billion due to their actions.
Accounts impersonating well-known cryptocurrency figures and social media influencers are becoming more common. A Nefture Security crime report found that platforms such as Telegram, played a key role in facilitating the fraud.
The common thread between 2022, 2023 and 2024 is that, contrary to popular belief, it is fraud, not hacks, that have caused the most damage to the crypto world, Nefture Security said.
All attempts by the authorities to contain the onslaught of criminals are met with their new cunning moves. For example, after each statement by law enforcement about the increased activity of cybercriminals, people start receiving calls allegedly from employees of various departments offering to help «secure their funds» on some reliable platform.
